Women's Health
Arvigo® Therapy
This work helps to optimize reproductive and digestive health. It includes bodywork and supportive modalities such as bajos (vaginal/pelvic steaming), spritual bathing, castor oil packs, herbal tinctures and the use of fajas. Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN brought this work to practitioners all over the globe after studying with Don Elijio Panti, a traditional Maya healer in Belize. It is a combination of what Rosita learned as Don Elijio’s apprentice, her training as a naprapathic doctor, and her studies with Miss Hortence Robinson, the most famous herbal midwife in Belize.
The bodywork is essentially a full-body treatment, with specific techniques to eliminate the causes of reproductive and digestive complaints in both men and women. The abdominal massage consists of gentle, non-invasive strokes to guide organs into their proper alignment and position and to increase the flows of blood, lymph, nerve, and chi. Improved flows and position allow the body to reach homeostasis and unlock its ability to heal and self-regulate.

Belly Binding
Belly binding is a traditional practice around the globe and has many benefits. It provides support to the womb after birth as well as support for the organs as they realign. The bind also aids in warmth for the torso. This allows for improved healing and circulation. Binding helps to decrease bloating and water retention. The supportive aspect helps to reduce back and shoulder pain from breastfeeding by improving posture.
It’s common to feel ungrounded in the postpartum time because of the extra space between the organs. There can be a feeling of openness and vulnerability. Belly binding provides comfort, a feeling of being nourished and held. Belly binding approximates the rectus muscles and facilitates the knitting back together of the connective tissue. In this way, it helps to prevent diastasis recti.
During a binding session, the abdomen is massaged with warming oil. The massage helps digestion and elimination to normalize. Tension in the low back and oblique muscles is addressed. The massage begins the approximation of the rectus muscles and helps to release the diaphragm, which is often compressed in late pregnancy. The massage is gentle and can be done after both vaginal and cesarean births. Belly binding can be done as early as 4 hours postpartum. It is done most often in the home. For the best outcome, binding is done as soon as possible and before 2 weeks postpartum.
Bone Closing
Becoming a mother is a rite of passage. After experiencing pregnancy and birth, postpartum is the final stage of this rite of passage. The bone closing ceremony serves to honor this journey and hold the new mother physically and emotionally. Beginning with pregnancy, the body starts to open and grow. Labor and birth are very profound forms of opening. The bone closing helps to close the mother’s body. The entire body receives the nurturing hug of the rebozo, a traditional cloth of many uses. This ceremony has origins in Mexico, but also in many other places around the world, including Russia and Morocco. The reason it is valued in many cultures is because we all share the same physiology and our needs postpartum are the same. Particular attention is given to closing of the pelvis.
Sitz bath/Vaginal Steam
Vaginal steaming in the postpartum time serves to soften and loosen remaining birth tissues and clots in the uterus. Another treatment centered around warmth and healing, it relaxes the pelvic floor muscles and increases blood and lymph flow to this area. It is helpful in healing the entire pelvic region, including hemorrhoids. Vaginal steaming is appropriate after the bright red blood slows postpartum. This is typically about 2 weeks if the mother is resting enough. Before this time, sitz baths are best for healing the pelvic floor. Sitz baths can be started the same day as delivery in most cases.
Moxa Box
Moxibustion is one of the many postpartum treatments that focuses on warmth. Moxa, also known as Chinese mugwort, has a unique deep and lasting effect. In this postpartum treatment, a box is used over the lower abdomen to deliver the heat and medicinal properties of the mugwort, burned as sticks. The effect is tonification of the spleen, which is important for building blood, moving fluid and blood, and supporting an adequate milk supply.
Moxibustion can be done at 2 or 3 days postpartum. It is ideal to repeat this treatment a few times or more in the first 3 weeks. The treatment is beneficial up to 1 year postpartum.
Womb Meditation
This guided meditation helps to connect to the womb and center. It focuses on the birth energy unique to each birth and provides whatever healing is needed. All birth experiences are honored with this meditation, including miscarriage. It is appropriate in the early postpartum time as well as many years later. This meditation is the beginning of a connection to the profound healing of birth energy. It is designed to provide the connection to this energy that can be used for further connection and healing within the family.
This meditation is especially helpful after cesarean births because it recreates the birth so the mind and body can have a sense of physiological completion.
